Where Is AI Growing Fastest in Healthcare Right Now?

AI, Healthcare

A patient texts your front desk on a Friday to reschedule a Monday appointment. Nobody replies until Tuesday, so the patient books elsewhere over the weekend. Health systems are now putting AI budgets toward exactly that problem, faster than they’re funding diagnostic tools.

Patient communication is the fastest-growing AI category in U.S. health systems this year, ahead of clinical documentation and administrative tools.

A February 2026 survey of 120 U.S. health systems by Eliciting Insights¹ found that 75% now use or plan to use at least one AI solution.

Among the eight use cases tracked, automated drafting of replies to patient texts grew 80% year over year, the largest jump in the study. That may explain why: for a smaller practice without a hospital-scale IT budget, communication is likely the AI use case with the lowest technical barrier and the fastest payoff.

How many health systems are actually using AI right now?

Three out of four U.S. health systems now use or plan to use AI in some form, up from fewer than six in ten a year earlier. Half now run or plan to run three or more AI solutions. Among systems able to measure ROI, more than half reported at least doubling what they spent.

Why is patient communication growing faster than clinical AI?

The growth rates make the pattern clear. Draft replies to patient texts grew 80% year over year, the fastest category tracked. Clinical documentation was next, 59% to 62% (“AI-based CDI” and “Clinical Note Taking/Ambient Listening,” respectively). Administrative categories lagged further behind: AI used to predict insurance denials grew just 4%.

Communication tools ask less of a health system: no physician has to review every message, and nothing needs to plug into the core electronic health record. A scheduling reply can run through separate messaging and calendar systems, which may explain why it goes live in weeks rather than months.

How can a small practice start using AI for patient communication?

While the survey covers health systems, the logic scales down. If a large system’s easiest AI win is answering patients faster, a private practice or dental group can start there too.

IPFone’s AI Voice Agents cover that entry point: booking, reminders, and answering common questions about hours or insurance, without replacing an existing calendar or CRM.

Several vendors here lead with clinical documentation tools; IPFone’s healthcare offering starts earlier, with the conversation before a patient reaches a provider.

Patient communication is where health systems are finding the fastest AI wins right now. And a smaller practice doesn’t need a hospital’s budget to do the same.

That’s the part IPFone builds for: AI Voice Agents that can go live in as little as one to two weeks, with setup handled by our team every step of the way, and connect to the scheduling and CRM tools a practice already runs. Book a free demo and see how it works.
